A wrongful death leads the investigators to Afghanistan & Taliban This work was well written by an author with meaningful contacts。 This story was informative as to the struggles of people living in war torn zones and their refugee / immigrant family。

Judy

A realistic tale of one of the many horrible events that took place during the wrongful invasion of Afghanistan。 Secrets and spies were the rule of law and corruption flaunted。 Now back to square one with the Taliban once more in control。 Music is again banned and musicians suffer。

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Dark Music。I've read one of the author's previous books before, and the premise piqued my interest, so I was excited when my request was granted。Sadly, this was not what I expected。 ** Minor spoilers ahead ** First, the characters: Rekke is some kind of a Sherlock Holmes type character, just one of many in so many mystery series I've read。 He's smart, observant, and once a gifted musician。He's also human。 He's severely depressed, self medicated, and has s Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Dark Music。I've read one of the author's previous books before, and the premise piqued my interest, so I was excited when my request was granted。Sadly, this was not what I expected。 ** Minor spoilers ahead ** First, the characters: Rekke is some kind of a Sherlock Holmes type character, just one of many in so many mystery series I've read。 He's smart, observant, and once a gifted musician。He's also human。 He's severely depressed, self medicated, and has suicidal thoughts。When a soccer referee is brutally murdered, he's asked for his keen observations on the murder suspect the police have brought in。 Rekke's immediate conclusion is that the suspect is not a killer。Micaela Vargas is the lone female on the team investigating the murder, a woman of color with a serious chip on her shoulder。 Her colleagues are sexist, misogynistic pigs who make internal comments about her appearance and her body。They're not the only ones; with the exception of Micaela's brother, nearly every man she encounters makes crude comments about the way she looks。 Micaela is not likable; she lacks empathy and compassion; when she rescues Rekke, she''s callous and insensitive to his feelings and depression (assuming incorrectly), that a wealthy man has no problems。In fact, she's almost always rude and brusque to people, except her criminal brother, and is in need of therapy as much as Rekke does。The murder case was neither compelling, suspenseful or interesting。 I could care less about the murderer soccer referee and his ties to the Taliban and the terrible things he did or was done to him。The writing was okay, though the translation was a bit choppy though that's to be expected。 Translations are not easy。I won't read the next book in the series。 。。。more

Dark Music by David Lagercrantz is the first in the Rekke and Vargas series。First, let me thank NetGalley, the publishers Knopf Doubleday Publishing and Penguin Random House Publishing and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。Series Information:Professor Hans Rekke is manic-depressive, and has genius insights into logic and observation。  He is musically gifted。  He was born into a family of wealth and power, but Dark Music by David Lagercrantz is the first in the Rekke and Vargas series。First, let me thank NetGalley, the publishers Knopf Doubleday Publishing and Penguin Random House Publishing and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。Series Information:Professor Hans Rekke is manic-depressive, and has genius insights into logic and observation。  He is musically gifted。  He was born into a family of wealth and power, but with an over-bearing mother who saw little but his failures。 He has a daughter Julia, and his relationship with his wife is "iffy"。  He and his brother Magnus do not always see eye-to-eye。Police Officer Micaela Vargas is the daughter of Chilean refugees, and she grew up in the poor area of Stockholm。  Both of her brothers Simon and Lucas are on the wrong side of the law。  She works with Inspector Jonas Beijor, Chief Inspector Carl Fransson, and Assistant Police Commissioner Martin Falkegren。My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)Jamal Kabir, a soccer referee, is beaten to death。  Suspicions immediately fall on the drunken father of one of the players。  But things are not as they seem。Assistant Police Commissioner Martin Falkegren takes a few colleagues, including the street-smart Officer Micaela Vargas, to meet with Professor Hans Rekke, who has published some rather amazing articles on interrogation techniques。  But Falkegren isn't impressed, and dismisses everything Rekke says。  Micaela Vargas, however, can't let it go, even after being removed from the murder investigation。Micaela and Hans end up working together to try and solve the murder, but things are a little more political than either had anticipated, and finding answers may put them both in danger。My Opinions:First, kudos to the translator  Ian Giles。Now, regarding the book。The character of Rekke seems to be a reproduction of Sherlock Holmes, including his deductive prowess, musical ability and drug use。  Vargas, then would be a female Watson。  They look like they will make a good team。   I like their budding relationship。Rekke has no problems discussing his mental health issues, which I found wonderful, although other people are quick to blame them for every problem that arises。  Vargas is still having issues at work for being a woman, and she has a family that does not help her spread her wings。 Both characters are working through their issues。I wasn't overly fond of the topics of the Taliban, religion, and terrorism, much less the overall political angles。  However, the story itself was interesting, although a little too drawn out。  The book is a little deep, with plenty of characters, so you have to pay attention。Bottom line, I will be watching for the next in this series! For a more complete review of this book and others (including the reason I chose to read/review this book, as well as author information and contact details), please visit my blog: http://katlovesbooksblog。wordpress。com/ 。。。more

This was a nice book to read – overall a good mystery, although sometimes the scenes were a bit choppy。 I find it interesting that there was mention of Hindustani and Qawwali music, as I had just studied these and written a paper on the topic for my music class。

crime fictionblurb says it is based on Sherlock Holmes: manic-depression, drug dependent, observant, musician, intelligent man, with political brother, assists the police with solving a murder, with the help of a hard-working, observant assistant。I wanted to read this book, as the author had worked on the Steig Larsson series。 My only other foray into Scandi-crime。 Gritty like that series, but not as gory。Want to read more of these characters。

Pavel Maleček

Nezáživný, nesympatický hlavní postavy。。。 Už pokračování milénia bylo slabý, tohle ještě horší。

Very much enjoyed the start of a new series outside of Lizbeth Salandar。 Well structured and compelling。

Alix

Less bleak than Henning Mankell/Kurt Wallander which made this easy to read (but has a couple weird sexual references)。

Sherlock Holmesian analysis。The novel begins a bit slowly as the two protagonists are introduced and begin to develop their relationship。 But the Holmesian analysis and drug dependency of the professor are captivating buttressed against the Watsonian doggedness of the police detective。 The only misstep is the author’s decision late in the novel to reveal what happened between the wicked and the dead。 If you need to know, you will love these digressions。 Personally, I was much more drawn to the q Sherlock Holmesian analysis。The novel begins a bit slowly as the two protagonists are introduced and begin to develop their relationship。 But the Holmesian analysis and drug dependency of the professor are captivating buttressed against the Watsonian doggedness of the police detective。 The only misstep is the author’s decision late in the novel to reveal what happened between the wicked and the dead。 If you need to know, you will love these digressions。 Personally, I was much more drawn to the quiet analysis and legwork of the protagonists and those digressions took away from that。 Since this begins a new series, I can only hope the author keeps the backstory revelations to himself in the future。 Still, it is an excellent read and recommended。 。。。more

Great mystery。 Excellent plot。

I assigned a 4 star to this book because I found the story captivating, the writing enjoyable, and the characters interesting。 There was some clunkiness and disjointed character development throughout the story that might bother some。 The author struggled with building the depth and outline of the two main characters but I think that is relatively common with a first in a series。 I am looking forward to the next book。

An immigrant football referee was murdered after a fractious end to the match he was in charge of。 There is a clear suspect, the drunken father of the star player who was fouled at the end of the match so causing the fracas。 A seemingly simple case but the police are struggling to get a confession out of the prime suspect。 Then a case review instigated by the assistant commissioner provides another angle of approach, they will involve Professor Hans Rekke to improve their interrogation technique An immigrant football referee was murdered after a fractious end to the match he was in charge of。 There is a clear suspect, the drunken father of the star player who was fouled at the end of the match so causing the fracas。 A seemingly simple case but the police are struggling to get a confession out of the prime suspect。 Then a case review instigated by the assistant commissioner provides another angle of approach, they will involve Professor Hans Rekke to improve their interrogation technique。 Rekke reviews the available video footage a demonstrates they have clearly got the right man。 Back to square one。 They are now looking for an older middle eastern looking man。The investigation stalls and when Vargas refuses to set up her criminal brother for an easy collar on another case she is sent back to community policing work。 Another suspect is eliminated for the murder, and it becomes clear the police are getting nowhere with it, so the investigation is shelved。Some months later a chance meeting between Vargas and Rekke results in her saving him from one of his self-destructive urges。 This act cements a strange relationship between them。 Now working together, they are determined to solve the case。The two principal characters are the classic set up of opposite leads。 Professor Rekke is mature man, wealthy, privileged, sophisticated, musical, and cerebral。 Officer Vargas is a younger woman, from a poor family living in one of the social housing projects on the outskirts of the city。 Her background means she is resourceful and possesses street smarts, she is also honest, hardworking, and determined to do good。 Much of the novel revolves around the interactions between the two as they develop a working relationship and start spark off each other。 They also need each other; Vargas wants to learn from Rekke and he needs her to save himself from his own self-destructive streak。Elements of Rekke are drawn from Sherlock Holmes, he is governed by logic and possesses acute observational skills and he ability to make deductions from what he notices。 Holmes famously dabbled with recreational drugs, here Rekke is hooked on a series of prescription drugs which are slowly destroying him。 Vargas has the makings of being a great character a feisty and smart young woman。 The plot centres on the aftermath of the 2003 war on terror。 The case is of a murdered refugee who has a mysterious past。 The authorities in the form of the Swedish government and the CIA want a quick and easy solution to the crime for their own reasons。 The digging into his back story by Rekke and Vargas unearths a tale radicalisation, torture and rendition that won’t stay buried。 The pacing is variable with activity coming in spurts, but at other times it is slow, ponderous, and perhaps a little dull。 The set up for a new novel series can be difficult, trying to judge the right amount of background and this coupled with the complex switching around as true identities are revealed have left it a little unbalanced。 Overall though it works and is an entertaining read if you stick with it。 。。。more

Loved - I did picture more along the lines of “Elementary” than traditional Sherlock。 I listened to some of the classical artists as they were mentioned in the book while I read - I found it engaging, entertaining- I look forward to the next one。

My favorite new release this week is "Dark Music," a gripping crime thriller from David Lagercrantz, the author who kept the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series rolling when Stieg Larsson passed away。 "Dark Music" has a chilly Swedish atmosphere, but it draws more inspiration from Sherlock Holmes than Lisbeth Salander。The year is 2003。 Micaela Vargas is a rookie cop working her way up the ranks of the Stockholm police force。 She is investigating the death of Jamal Kabir, a refugee who fled Afgh My favorite new release this week is "Dark Music," a gripping crime thriller from David Lagercrantz, the author who kept the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series rolling when Stieg Larsson passed away。 "Dark Music" has a chilly Swedish atmosphere, but it draws more inspiration from Sherlock Holmes than Lisbeth Salander。The year is 2003。 Micaela Vargas is a rookie cop working her way up the ranks of the Stockholm police force。 She is investigating the death of Jamal Kabir, a refugee who fled Afghanistan for Stockholm and eventually began coaching a youth league soccer team。 After a confrontation with an angry parent during a match, Kabir was brutally stoned to death in the woods behind the soccer field。 A recording of the game exists but several crucial moments from the scene are missing。 The angry parent is the target of the investigation, but Micaela digs deeper, developing a theory that something more complex is behind the killing。Enter Hans Rekke, Stanford psychology professor and expert pill-popper。 Once a renowned classical pianist, now a specialist in interrogation techniques, the highly intuitive Rekke sees what others cannot。。。but he's kind of a wreck。 He is old, unmotivated, and deeply depressed。 Micaela first meets Hans Rekke when her team enlists him to analyze and interpret the data from their investigation。 As the jigsaw puzzle pieces of their murder case begin to reveal themselves, Hans Rekke sparks to life again。 He cannot resist a good mystery。Micaela plays Dr。 Watson to Rekke's Sherlock Holmes, and together they make for an endearing detective duo。 The plot of "Dark Music" doesn't just skim the surface of the killer's motivations。 A grim backstory with roots in real historical tragedy (and classical music!) provides the macabre trail of clues leading Micaela and Rekke to their dark finale。 Like Hans Rekke, I cannot resist a good mystery。⭐⭐⭐⭐🎻4 stars and a few measures of a rapturous violin (NOT viola) melody。 。。。more
